Interview for Homes and Gardens Magazine; 'Metal by day and fabric by night' states the bio on Catherine Hicks' Instagram page. These materials may seem strikingly incompatible, but for Catherine working with both mediums comes naturally.

‘I love the textures of both metal and fabric and the subtlety of the tones that you can get within each. I love being able to switch between the two contrasting materials’, she says. Having experimented with making textiles and jewellery since her teens, it was while on maternity leave in 2018 that she made her first mobile, a gift for her son. This quickly became Catherine's Studio, a business producing hanging sculptures crafted from copper and brass. Alongside these is a line of contemporary patchwork quilts made using remnant, end of-roll and repurposed fabrics.

'Making a quilt for my second child reignited my love for quilt making’ Catherine explains. Starting with rough sketches, both the quilts and mobiles evolve spontaneously as she plays with composition, balance, colour and proportion as she works.

Much of her inspiration comes from visiting the landscapes of the Somerset Levels and the wildlife found in its nature reserves. 'I go there especially in winter when the light is low and the reeds are a golden colour, and they move gently and catch the light. I have always loved birds for their movement and how it brings the landscape to life - I try to capture this within the work I create."

Next, Catherine says she'll be progressing her textile work by developing her own dye recipes: Natural dyes are something that I am focusing on and will be exploring more in the coming months. My garden serves as a larder for homegrown sources of dye, as they are the perfect way to bring the tones of the natural environment into my work’
